What is a Public Intellectual Today: Anne Helen Petersen

The Graduate Humanities Public Writing Project, for the spring engagement of its 2020-21 "What Is A Public Intellectual Today?" speaker series, welcomes acclaimed author and journalist Anne Helen Petersen on April 14, 2021 from 4-5:15pm. Registration for the webinar is free but required. Please register here

Dr. Anne Helen Petersen has charted an enviable and unusual career path for a trained scholar: after completing a PhD in media studies at the University of Texas, she leveraged a personal blog on the history of celebrity gossip into a series at The Hairpin, Scandals of Classic Hollywood. When that series gained popularity, Dr. Petersen abandoned her search for a tenure-track teaching job in favor of a position writing cultural criticism full-time for BuzzFeed, where she became widely known for her features on celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Armie Hammer, and Kim Kardashian, as well as a viral 2019 examination on millennial burnout that became her latest book, Can’t Even: How Millennials Became The Burnout Generation. In 2020, Dr. Petersen left BuzzFeed to write a reported newsletter for Substack, Culture Study.

In this exciting conclusion to the GHPWP’s year of events celebrating public intellectualism, GHPWP Associate Director Laura Goode will interview Dr. Petersen about the relationship between scholarship and journalism, pandemic burnout, and how she’s effected multiple career transitions as a humanist.

This event invites Stanford affiliates—faculty, staff, alumni, and especially humanities students interested in publishing work for a popular audience—to gather for candid conversation.
